Getting kids excited about reading can be one of the most challenging parts of parenting or teaching. Fortunately I have these wonderful books in my toolbox.
1. Franny K. Stein by Jim Benton Although this series may be slightly harder to get your hands on, it is definitely worth it for the your young mad scientist. Franny is not your typical girl. She is an inventor and scientist. Although sometimes The illustrations in this book add lots of interest and fun into her adventures defeating some of the unintended monsters that her experiments create.
2. The Magic Treehouse by Mary Pope Osborne The Magic Treehouse is the perfect series for young readers to start with. Osborne creates two relatable characters, Annie and Jack, and sends them off on a magical adventure. Osborne designed the chapters to be short enough that new readers do not get overwhelmed by reading a chapter, and exciting enough that they want to keep reading. This is usually my go to series when transitioning a beginning reader into chapter books.
2. Dragon Masters by Tracey West and Graham Howells The Dragon Masters series another great series to get young readers interested in chapter books. In this series a young boy named Drake gets whisked away from his onion field to learn how to train his very own dragon. West does a great job in this series creating loveable characters with new problems. Kids love how each book adds a new dragon or character.
3. The Notebook of Doom by Troy Cummings This series not only has a great cast of characters, and storyline, but also has engaging maps, checklists, and "information pages." Students will love reading about all of the different monsters in the monster notebook, and will have a great time trying to figure out what monster Alexander and his friends are up against next.
4. The Kingdom of Wrenly by Jordan Quinn In the Kingdom of Wrenly Clara and Prince Lucas become friends and go on many adventures solving problems and meeting mystical creatures across the kingdom. This series is a great introduction into the fantasy genre for young readers. Any child that loves the idea of talking to gnomes, or raising dragons will be sucked in and engaged in these beautifully told stories.
I am always looking for more great beginner books. Let me know if you have books that you love to recommend to your beginning readers!
